Born Beyond The Border

I put the words of this song on line because so many people it has touched so many people of Scot's ancestory.
Its from the album Twa Corbies ( 2 crow's) by Gaberlunzie ( the beggar's purse). The boys performing this song explained it was a poem
given to them by a woman who was indeed born beyond the border. Gordon Menzies of Gaberlunzie put the song to music.

Born Beyond The Border

Some set sale for Africa with bibles in their hands
Some where forced to the colonies to build a new heartland
Even those on the work of the Lord could scarce forbear to weep
But the bitterest tears of all were shed by those who made way for the sheep

Chorus

Though were born beyond the border don't say we don't belong
We've a legacy of Bruce and Wallace too
We're the children of the clearances the wanderers old and young
And the heart and soud in Scotland just like you.

The Names, the songs, the stories and the measure of their loss
Formed lullabies for children born beneath the southern cross
All across the mighty rockies to the wide pacific shore
The names of home town's reborn, spring into life once more

Chorus

So when you sing of the great white sheep this you must know
While Scotland mourns her tragedy it was us that had to go
In exile now far away from the land of our race's birth
We're the living flag of Andrew acattered all across the earth

Chorus

The Wallace

Due to popularity of this song amoung my freens I thought I would show them the lyrics to another of Gaberlunzie's songs.
This one is particularly goulish and a BIG favourite with the Scottish children I teach.
I should perhaps state that I play the whole album and the its the way the last line is song
is sung that appeals to them( I am not teaching dissent in the classroom). It's from the same album but
written by Jim McLean who also wrote the words to The Massacre of Glencoe

The Wallace

They hung Wallace high on the gallows
And cut him down ere he was dead
And as he chocked the Queen jeered him
For Daring to cross English Ted
His heart and his liver were savaged
As her majesty watched the glad scene
His head was cut off, he was quartered
'twas an afternoon fit for a queen

Chorus

They murdered the Wallace for treason
His bodyhas long since decayed
But no English crown can destroy him
For Wallace is with us today
Aye Wallace is with us today

He took up his sword against England
The cowardly sassench ran
He beat them at Falkirk and Stirling
And burned them like rates from our land
King Edward of England was raging
That Scotland was free once again
The Scottish republican army
Had wiped out his best fighting men

Chorus

Wiliam The Wallace fought bravely
No Englishman could him defeatv But English gold bought Scottish quizzlings
And he was betrayed by Mentieth
With a crown made of thorns he was tortured
For setting his own country free
How am I trator cried Wallace
When England is forgien to me?

Chorus

In Edinburgh Falkirk and Stirling
From Inverness to Elderslie
His spirit is calling for justice
And commands us to set ourselves free
So once again we do battle
Let the broad swords and English bows hum
With no fear of betrayal to the saxon
Let them come, let them come, let them come.

Chorus
